Bad breath or halitosis is almost common place. Not everyone is aware that they suffer from chronic bad breath or halitosis but it would be extremely rare if not impossible to escape an entire lifetime without having at least one episode of smelly breath.
More than the problem itself is that friends, social and acquaintances and work colleagues would not tell you about it and you could go around for weeks or even months without realizing you have a case of chronic bad breath and before doing anything about it.
So what causes bad breath? It is comparatively easy to keep the matter under control with a basic understanding once you understand what causes bad breath.
Onions and garlic are common examples of foods with such strong odors that they can remain on your breath hours after eating them. These bad breath products offer only temporary relief. Before you know it traces find their way into your breath once the ingredients have been digested and flow into the blood stream. Most people avoid excessive use as much as possible; so eating garlic prawns on a first, second or even third date is not a wise move if you want to get closer as the date ends.
So what else, apart from food causes bad breath? Tiny food particles left in the mouth are another common cause of bad breath or halitosis. These tiny particles rot in the mouth, particularly if they get stuck between your teeth or under the gum line.
Any kind of bacteria left to fester in your mouth could cause bad breath.
Finally, some medical conditions such as ketosis or diabetes may be responsible for a foul smell on one’s breath.

Simple Solutions to the Question: What Causes Bad Breath?
Regular brushing with a toothbrush and good toothpaste like baking soda toothpaste and flossing will definitely help to either get rid of bad breath or at least keep it under control.
But if this doesn’t do the trick then it’s best to consult a dentist and doctor to uncover the primary reason in each separate case.
A regular dental check-up should uncover whether any aspect of oral health that might be responsible for any lingering mouth odors and if this doesn’t work them a doctor can order blood tests to establish what is causing your smelly breath.
Your halitosis could be a result of a potentially serious condition, so medical advice is a good idea.
But don’t wait until you get a dental or a doctor’s appointment to take safe action on your own. It’s unlikely that you don’t have a toothbrush and toothpaste but do you use them after every meal and do you use them properly?
If you don’t use them properly, start now. Take care of your oral hygiene and your bad breath might surprise you and disappear.
Regular brushing and flossing may sound like advice for children but you’d be surprised how many adults forget to do this simple routine every day!

Bad breath can hang around way past its ‘used by date’ and turn into something very annoying, if not a full on affliction.

Most who suffer with chronic bad breath often have excellent oral hygiene so they’re confused if not at a loss as to why this smelly ghost hangs around and what they can to do next to fix their halitosis. The best advice is to make appointments with your dentist and doctor to check your mouth and body and see if something else could be the bad breath cause.
The most common bad breath cause is from a bacterium that’s naturally present in your mouth. But if food particles are left in your mouth between your teeth, under your tongue or under your gums the bacteria grows, feeding off these tiny food particles from your last meal. Too many and you get a case of bad smelly breath.
There are many ways you can fight this. It goes without saying that using a good toothbrush that gets between teeth is the first plan of attack. A lot of people brush around their teeth but miss the crevices around their teeth, their back teeth and their tongue when brushing.
Make sure you brush your teeth for at least five minutes.
Any less than five minutes means you’re not reaching all the places that can cause foul breath. Use a good quality toothpaste and mouthwash.
Cheaper brands don’t always have the right amounts of active ingredients to really clean your teeth.
Some bad breath products can actually make your breath worse. Use products such as a baking soda toothpaste and possibly even peroxide as the main ingredients. These two elements can help control your off-putting breath and allow you to feel more confident when you’re dealing with colleagues, friends or loved ones. But as the label says; ‘if symptoms persist seek medical attention.’

Chronic bad breath is something that haunts us all at sometime in our lives. I get a sinus condition so I have to be careful my breath doesn’t smell either from medication to control it or from the built up of toxins in my nasal and sinus passages.
That’s me. But you may not know you have smelly breath. And you can get bad breath from lots of different things including;
- side effects of medication
- getting over a cold or flu
- a high protein diet
- a high lactose diet
- sinus condition
- diabetes or high sugar levels
- other medical condition
- garlic or other rich foods
- excessive alcohol
- cigarette or cigar smoking
If you have this constant taste in your mouth then you’ll find that it’s affecting every part of your life including your job, love life, family life and social life. Some one may have been brave enough to tell you but like most people you pay attention for a minute and then dismiss it until someone says something again. That could be weeks or months in between reminders.

The condition of your tongue is a sign of your overall health. Your tongue looks totally different when you have the flu and when your well. The first often has a thick coating – white or yellow- on it, while when you’re well your tongue is clean and pink, healthy looking.
Coatings on your tongue, whether white or yellow, indicates the presence of bacteria in your mouth which continues to grow until you are well again and changes your breath from fresh to stinky.
If you don’t know about tongue scraping then brushing or scraping this coating off your tongue every day can certainly restore your breath. Allowing it to build up can create smelly breath. You can buy tongue scraper, but it’s not necessary because the job can easily be done with your toothbrush.
