Many people are not even aware that they have bad breath. Maybe you are one of them? To find out, lick the back of your hand with your tongue then wait a few seconds for it to dry then smell your hand. It is the best indication of the state of your breath, and how it seems to everyone else.

There are a lot of products that you can buy that claim they can cure your bad breath. But in a lot of cases they have the potential to make the condition worse, rather than cure it. Dead cells and food matter collect on the tongue, especially towards the back area. Bacteria love to live there as conditions are ripe for them. You can clean your tongue with a toothbrush, but for maximum results and to ensure that the offending matter is removed, it is wise to buy a scraper which will remove everything offensive, leaving your breath fresher. I recommend using a scraper once a day, preferably at night.

At home ingredients can be just as effective and here are a few for you to try:

Mint – chew it as a breath freshener or soak a few leaves in a cup of boiling water for about three minutes. Great for the digestion which is another possible culprit.

Baking soda - already discussed in brushing but can also be used as a effective mouthwash.

There are a lot of reasons as to what may be causing bad breath, or halitosis. It may be caused by an illness, medication, or diet issues just to name a few. Because of this, it can be hard to pinpoint the best bad breath cure as things vary from person to person. However, over 90% of bad breath smell originates from the mouth, where plaque and bacteria in the mouth are large contributing factors. The bacteria in your mouth performs the primary function of breaking down food. However, proteins and dairy may have the detrimental result of getting the same bacteria to overproduce sulphur compounds named cysteine. When the air you exhale is mixed with these compounds the result is a bad smell that can be hard to bear.

Most commonly, the tongue is where most bacteria resides, especially towards the back. So a good start to finding the best bad breath cure is by brushing your teeth, flossing and scraping / cleaning the tongue. Many people don’t remember to clean the tongue when they are brushing their teeth and the result of this is that the pesky bacteria builds up on the tongue over a period of time. Alcohol and coffee dry the mouth out, stopping the production of saliva which is a natural way of flushing away waste in the mouth. To stop dry mouth during the day, always make sure that you are well hydrated throughout the day.

Should bad breath still remain, and seems to be persistent and difficult to eradicate, then it is time to visit a doctor to rule out any medical conditions, and a dentist to check for teeth and gum infection. By doing this you can work with professionals to find an effective bad breath cure.
