The First Step To Finding A Cure For Halitosis

Posted: January 26th, 2011 | Author: Rupert | Filed under: Bad Breath Cures and Remedies | 2 Comments »

When full blown halitosis ‘hits’ it should be pretty obvious to everyone that a cure is needed. That is obvious, but often it is not as obvious as it should be to the person with the condition. Hard to believe I know but I can recall two recent occasions when I struggled with halitosis although it was the other person with the problem, not me!

In the local pub, I recently bumped into an old friend and it was great to see her after such a long time. We chatted but as the pub grew louder I had to get closer to hear her. I didn’t linger, the stench of smoking was overpowering! The smell was as if the contents of an ashtray were being breathed over me. I do not exaggerate, but this pales into insignificance compared to the second incident.

Resources You Need

At a party I was introduced to the boyfriend of an old acquaintance. He seemed fine until he spoke, usually you would assume that it was what he said that was the problem but no, it was his pungent breath. When I recount this incident I am often accused of hyperbole but I assure you I do not exaggerate.

His breath was so strong, so vile and so noticeable you could almost see it! You could certainly taste it, that’s for sure. It almost had a ‘poison cloud’ presence of its own. I then asked friends at the party if they were aware of the halitosis, there was a pattern in the replies. Those that lived close to the man in question sort of ‘ummed’ and ‘ahhed’ about it not committing to an answer, while those from further afield were vociferous in their disdain and dislike of the man’s halitosis.

There’s two points here, firstly, halitosis often affects others more than the sufferer, certainly socially. This can lead to embarrassment and awkwardness, often more pronounced in those without the condition. It is often friends and family that suffer with the condition not wanting to offend the person with bad breath! Secondly, this ‘politeness’ can prolong the situation! It does more harm than good. Whatever, halitosis is a nasty condition which can go untreated and as such fester for a long time before treatment is even considered.

I would say it is important for friends of a sufferer to let that person know they need to get their condition checked out. There are numerous causes of halitosis but the first stage is realizing that you have the condition, sometimes it is up to a significant other to help the sufferer before finding a cure for halitosis can be considered.

You would be amazed at the smells that come out of R&S. I’m beginning to regret buying this scratch and sniff monitor.

h2>Halitosis and Basics of Oral Hygiene – Why You Should Not Forget to Use a Tongue Brush or Scraper

It is estimated that between 80 and 90 per cent of chronic halitosis cases are caused by a problem which originates in the oral cavity. Even if the bad breath problem is not chronic, it is still very likely that the nasty odours come from the mouth.

For this reason alone, it is worth getting at least the basics right. And this means oral hygiene has to be optimal to prevent the problem from getting worse. This includes adequate tooth brushing after main meals, flossing and also using a tongue brush or scraper to clean the surface of the tongue.

Effective tongue cleaning can make a huge difference because – while it will probably not eliminate a chronic bad breath problem – it will definitely help minimise bacteria overgrowth below the tongue surface, where they usually love to hide. Finding a permanent cure for halitosis means the root of the problem needs to be identified first, but unless oral hygiene is improved, you will be feeding all those bacteria exactly what they want, which means they will reproduce even quicker.

More Information

Filliform papillae at the back of the tongue are the cylinder-like hairy structures that can be seen with the naked eye. While at the front of the tongue these hair-like bumps are constantly trimmed by friction and mechanical forces (when talking, eating, etc), the area at the back of the tongue remains pretty much friction free, meaning that filliform papillae grow much longer there and hence they tend to trap a lot of debris. Put quite simply, the front of the tongue is usually self-cleaning while the back of the tongue needs a bit of help!

Regular use of a tongue brush or scraper is recommended for everybody, but chronic bad breath sufferers need to pay particular attention and make sure oral hygiene is always optimal. There is no need to overdo it either: make sure the toothbrush has soft bristles as well and do not brush teeth and tongue more than three or four times a day.

Also it is worth mentioning that a normal toothbrush is very ineffective at cleaning the tongue. The bristles are too thick to get to the crevices and, in addition, a brush alone is not able to trim the filliform papillae (that is why brushing and scraping is important: brush to clean below the surface and scrape to clean the top of the surface and to trim the filliform papillae).

So if you are a chronic halitosis sufferer, make sure you get the basics right first of all. Curing halitosis can take some time, but learning now how to keep your mouth clean is going to pay off in the end. Remember also to visit your dentist and dental hygienist regularly; this is vital too.

Discover the Causes of Halitosis and learn how to treat bad breath

Halitosis is the unpleasant odor that you may smell when somebody breathes out.  Bad breath halitosis in the majority of cases originates in the mouth. Due to the consumption of various foods and beverages the strength of odor will vary. At the night time the mouth is less active, giving us the morning breath odor.  The tongue is the common place to find halitosis. Food and dead epithelial cells are regularly found on the dry and poorly cleansed part of the tongue.

Halitosis Treatment

Mouthwashes and mints are only a partial solution to the problem as they do not completely remove the source of bad breath halitosis, which is the bacteria. There are products available for halitosis treatment that target the source and carry a powerful mix of treatment to cure the halitosis. Good ways to remove the bacteria and thus reduce the possibility of bad odours is through the use of a tongue cleaner.  There are also specialty toothpaste, floss and tooth brush products that work hard to treat the halitosis.

Halitosis Causes

While the tongue is not the only contributor, it is one of the main halitosis causes. For those looking to find out possible halitosis causes, the mouth is good place to start. Faulty dental work happens, whether through an unqualified dentist or simply an error. Food will always get between the teeth. These types of things may cause halitosis.

While brushing your teeth cleans most of your mouth, it does not clean everything.  Additional products may be needed to get a really clean mouth.  Mouthwashes are said to be a good way to get rid of the bits of food, but also to kill the bacteria which exists in our mouth. Whatever your age, you might also have dentures, if they are not completely clean, that too can cause bad breath.

Diagnosing Halitosis

Talking about mouth hygiene is not the most common subject among friends. It is often embarrassing and awkward. With the arrival of the internet, the opportunities to discuss and diagnose your symptoms has become so much easier.  A quick glance at the internet shows how widespread certain ailments are. People have begun to share their opinions and chat to sufferers of similar problems, after years of suffering in silence. It has been known that people, who seek advice on bad breath from professionals, have often never asked for the opinion of a friend or family. They suffer form a heightened worry of having bad breath and are commonly said to have halitophobia. There are forums where users exchange tips and ideas, which may or may not work.

What worked for me, although I will say it’s not just do this and “bam your breath is cured” as they make you change your entire mouth cleaning habits. So you end up doing it all their way. But in the end it becomes a daily routine. It covers Post Nasal Drip and Tonsil Stones as well thankfully. When you have bad breath it messes up your whole life. And I suppose the best thing is they don’t make you go out buying “special” products for the rest of your life. So try Oraltech Labs. Just don’t get it and then think you’ll do what it says “now and then” because it’s either all or nothing, and trust me getting rid of my room clearing faecal breath meant I was all in. Alex’s, J. The cure for your halitosis will often depend upon the cause. If the cause of your halitosis is something as simple as poor dental hygiene then you can just work to improve your dental hygiene practices. If the cause of your halitosis is something else then you may need another cure.
