Why is his breath so bad?

My husband has horrible breath. He brushes his teeth, gargles, all of that but still has terrible breath. In the morning when I wake up, I’ll leave the bedroom to get a glass of water, when I return I notice the entire bedroom smells like his breath.

Is this halitosis? Is his stomach upset? I notice that it’s not always THIS bad. Sometimes it’s a little better, sometimes worse. I’ve said something to him in the past (at a time it wasn’t quite as bad), that maybe he ought to go brush his teeth (maybe two hours after he already had). I don’t say anything now though because I feel bad and don’t want to hurt his feelings. I’m just worried something may be wrong or out of sorts with him.

Hi there,

Telling somebody else is not easy. My partner told me several times (as well as other people) and I felt terrible each time, cause I was already suspicious that my breath was bad.

I suffered from bad breath for 12 years and my oral hygiene was pretty good. However, it was not until last year when I decided I could not live like that any more, and so I was determined to find out what was causing my bad breath. It turns out there are many things that can cause bad breath and, in my situation, it was several factors that were contributing, the main ones being: an infected wisdom tooth, gingivitis, not brushing my tongue and not flossing, and a dry mouth. I have been able to tackle each cause, one at a time, and now I am so happy cause my halitosis has been cured.

Please, no matter how hard it is, tell your husband, and tell him exactly how BAD his breath can be. It is the ONLY way he will be able to take some action. Seeing a dentist and periodontist to check for any infections and gum disease is vital, so this would be the first step. On top of that, once the causes have been identified, it is just a question of dealing with each cause individually.

For instance, in my case, I had my wisdom tooth extracted. I also had a really good clean of my gums and teeth (periodontist). I bought myself a good tongue brush and a good electric toothbrush. I regularly use good products that stimulate my saliva to prevent dry mouth, and I also use an oral irrigator, which I find is one of the best gadgets ever invented, because they leave an unbelievable clean feeling all around my gums and teeth.

There are a few other main causes of bad breath, and ways to deal with them. If you would like to find out more, take a look at my website below. I really hope it helps. I know it may be difficult, but you need to tell your husband – it is the only way he will take some action: by knowing the truth.
